Protocol Analysis in IP Networks

Protocol analysis probes with Napatech network adapters

Napatech network adapters, installed in standard servers, provide an affordable and efficient hardware platform for protocol analysis probe development.

A probe with Napatech adapters can be used in telecom networks, in particular mobile, and in enterprise networks for IP-based services, for example VoIP. Only the exact traffic used for protocol analysis is distributed to the protocol analysis application.

Quality of Service (QoS) and Service Level Agreement (SLA) supervision

For voice and video conferencing it is important to deliver reliable services to the end-user. Napatech network adapters can be used to detect nanosecond packet jitter or measure data response time.

Key features for protocol analysis

  • Efficient distribution
  • Protocol recognition
  • Data reduction
  • Data merge

Efficient distribution to multiple CPU cores

The Napatech network adapters classify frames in real-time and use hash keys for sorting traffic according to source, destination, ports and protocols. The adapter intelligently distributes, on a per flow basis, to multiple CPU cores so the protocol analysis application can analyze flows. The result is effective and efficient analysis.

Upstream and downstream flows can be correlated for efficient application processing. For example in a VoIP telephone call RTP/RTCP traffic in both directions can be correlated for analysis.

Recognition of major enterprise and telecom protocols

The Napatech network adapters recognize major layer 2-4 protocols, tunneling protocols (GTP, GRE, SCTP) and encapsulated traffic (ISL, MPLS, VLAN) typically used in telecom. A pattern compare filter can be set up to allow the application to define data patterns for identification of particular packets also known as coloring.

Minimize amount of captured data to be analyzed

The Napatech network adapters can filter protocols relevant to the specific protocol analysis application. Additionally, the adapter can remove duplicate packets and slice away parts of a packet.

Data merging for performance improvement

The adapter provides merging of traffic across multiple ports and adapters which provides efficient application processing.
