How is a Napatech Accelerator different from a standard server NIC based on DPDK?

How can I buy a Napatech accelerator?

What is zero packet loss?
 
Napatech accelerators will not drop any packets even when receiving 64 byte minimum frame size at full line rate. 
How are Napatech accelerators different than standard NICs?
 
Napatech accelerators are made for performance acceleration of network management and security applications, enabling them to stay ahead of the speed of networks in order to do their jobs. Standard NICs are made as an end point of network to provide peer-to-peer communication functionality for general user applications.

Why are Napatech adapters called "accelerators" instead of NICs (Network Interface Cards)?
 
Napatech accelerators are equipped with onboard hardware acceleration features for network management and security applications with minimal impact on server platform resources. To distinguish from regular NICs, which have no (or very limited) performance acceleration features, we call our products “accelerators.”

What specifications are required for the platform server of Napatech accelerators?
 
A server equipped with appropriate PCIe slots can be a server platform for Napatech accelerators. Supported OS are Linux, FreeBSD, and Windows. The host server resources consumed by Napatech accelerators are minimal, with no specific requirement for CPU performance and its memory size.

Is it possible to use PCAP applications such as SNORT/Suricata with Napatech accelerators?
 
Yes, all Napatech accelerators support PCAP and there is an application note for running SNORT with Napatech accelerators available. The Napatech driver provides the possibility for setting up 32 virtual PCAP interfaces per accelerator.

Is it possible to load balance traffic with Napatech accelerators to different cores? 
 
Yes, and it’s possible to use many pre-defined hash modes. It’s also possible to have up to 5 tuples in sorted and unsorted.

Can I time synchronize Napatech accelerators with IEEE 1588 Grandmaster Clocks?
 
Yes, accelerators with a PTP port can be synchronized via PTP or the Napatech accelerator can act as a Grandmaster.

Can I use different type of accelerators in same server?
 
Yes, it possible to combine up to eight accelerators in one server, but check with a Napatech sales representative for such setup, as not all accelerators can be used.
What server types does Napatech recommend for their accelerators?
 
Napatech accelerators are designed for use with Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) servers, and work with any PCIe compliant server.  Hint: Make sure that the length of the slot, number of lanes, and power supply matches the chosen Napatech product.

I am using 3rd party software (Symantec, Oracle, Viavi, etc.). Which card is right for my software?
 
Depending on the software you use, you should order the following accelerators:
 
  • CA: order the NAC10-2 or NAC10-4
  • Symantec: order the NT4E-4T (801-0075-09-02-SY) and the 2GB memory module (802-003400-02) or the NT4E-4 (801-0074-09-02-SY)
  • Oracle: order the NT4E-4T (801-0074-09-02) and the 2GB memory module (802-0034-00-02)
  • Viavi (Formerly JDSU): order the 4 x 1GbE (801-0090-01-14)

How do I get new software to my Napatech accelerator?

Is it possible to assign an IP address to Napatech accelerators and use it as a standard NIC?
 
Yes, that’s possible, but contact Napatech sales for more information.
What SFP and SFP+ qualified modules can I use with Napatech accelerators? 
 
The list of qualified pluggable modules is available via the support center. If you don’t have a login to the support center, please contact sales for more information on what SFP and SFP+ qualified modules you can use with Napatech accelerators.
How can I buy Pandion?
 
You can buy Pandion from our webstore on the Arrow website, or contact us directly if you want to evaluate Pandion before you buy it.
What happens to the data when Napatech Pandion storage is completely full? Will the Pandion stop capturing data?
 
Napatech Pandion will continue to capture and overwrite the oldest data.
Can I group more than one Napatech Pandion and search captured traffic across all of them? 
 
Yes, Pandions can be grouped together, and a federated search can be performed across all of them.
The data from all grouped Pandions is merged in time order and returned in a single PCAP file.

 

Can I have multiple users logged in at same time?
 
Yes.

 

 

Is it possible to search for a specific captured traffic and record traffic at the same time?
 
Yes.
Does Napatech Pandion have accelerated search? 
 

Yes, captured packets are indexed using a 5-tuple, thereby accelerating searches that contain these 5-tuples.

There are four 1/10Gbps rate capture interfaces. Do they all have to be the same rate or can it be a mix?
 
It can be any mix. 
 
Is PTP time synchronization supported? 
 
Yes. Pandion packet timestamping can be synchronized via PTP.
Can I combine Pandion Flex and Pandion 20 into the same federated search?
 
Yes.
How many disks may fail without affecting the operation?
 
One per chassis, i.e. one for Pandion 20 and one per unit for a Flex Solution.
Can I filter out certain data that I do not want to keep?
 
Yes.
Which type of authentication is used?
 
Microsoft AD and full LDAP can be used for authentication.
How can I buy a NAC?

What is the difference between NACs and accelerators?
 
NACs have the same basic properties as our accelerators, but support only the PCAP interface and are designed to be used with popular open source applications without any development or integration effort.

Can I increase the number of PCAP applications with a NAC?
 
Yes, our NACs support multiple PCAP streams and enable you to scale up to 32 PCAP applications for maximum performance.
