Napatech brings intelligence to network monitoring

Napatech today announced the availability of unique features that provide visibility into tunnels for network monitoring and analysis of value-added services running over IP, such as VOIP, VPN and mobile data. Napatech’s network adapters have the unique capability to intelligently distribute 10Gbps flows in real-time to up to 32 CPU cores based on Ethernet, IP, MPLS, layer 4 and now GTP, GRE and SCTP tunnel information.

As more services transition to 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps IP networks, the importance of network monitoring and analysis is increasing – but so are the demands on intelligence and processing capabilities. By using Napatech’s family of network adapters for real-time network analysis, Napatech’s OEM customers can build high performance network appliances providing new levels of intelligence and throughput performance.

    Groundbreaking Approach to Intrusion Prevention

With the transition to 10 Gbps networks, there is increasing emphasis on increasing the performance of Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) to keep up with higher data rates. High-Performance IPS provides in-line processing of network traffic in real-time and has traditionally required expensive systems based on proprietary hardware platforms. With the introduction of Napatech’s family of In-line network adapters, an alternative approach based on standard off-the-shelf server hardware was made possible.

This approach can help to reduce the time, cost and technical risk associated with development of high-performance IPS.

Napatech’s In-line adapters provide multi-port 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps packet reception and transmission at full line-rate. Based on PCI-Express, the network adapters can be deployed in standard x86 servers to provide a powerful, full throughput platform for high-performance IPS solutions.

nPulse and Napatech Make 10 Gbps Capture and Replay Affordable

nPulse Network Systems today announced the availability of the nPulse HammerHead 10 Gbps Capture and Replay system based on the Napatech NT20E 2 x 10 Gbps In-line adapter. HammerHead is the first traffic testing product to provide full line-rate 10 Gbps packet capture, record-to-disk and replay capabilities at an affordable price.

With growing deployment of 10 Gigabit networks, and the proliferation of sophisticated network devices designed to work at these high speeds, realistic traffic testing is more important than ever. At 10 Gbps, even small errors or configuration issues can have major performance, security and cost impacts. The ideal test scenario is to capture and record live network traffic, and then to replay it into the devices or networks under test, in a controlled environment and at line rates, to validate operation and performance.

Napatech Sets New Standards for Time Synchronization

Napatech today releases new time synchronization features that will allow extremely accurate packet time stamping. This is important for measuring quality of service factors, such as latency, in packet networks.

Available on the latest Napatech intelligent network adapters for real-time network analysis, the time synchronization solution allows Napatech network adapters to be synchronized with a variety of time sources, such as Global Positioning System (GPS), IEEE 1588v2, CDMA and Pulse Per Second (PPS) sources. This allows packets to be time-stamped with an accuracy of 50 nanoseconds in relation to the PPS output. The time synchronization solution also allows Napatech adapters to be daisy-chained allowing a single time synchronization source for multiple adapters.

New Napatech In-line bypass solution allows intelligent feature upgrades without disrupting network traffic

Napatech today launched the NTBPE Optical Bypass Adapter; an intelligent bypass and failover solution for In-line network appliances. The NTBPE provides a unique alternative to traditional in-line failover solutions, by also allowing intelligent upgrades of network appliance functionality without disrupting network connectivity.

The NTBPE is a stand-alone adapter providing support for up to 4 network ports of either 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps bandwidth and two Napatech In-line adapters. With the NTBPE, Napatech In-line adapters can support applications for in-line network monitoring, network measurement or network security on two network connections with full 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps throughput. In the event of a failure on the network adapters or on the supporting server, the NTBPE will automatically perform a switch to a bypass path, which allows the network connections to continue without disruption.

The switch to a bypass path can also be initiated on command via software. This allows Napatech adapters to be inserted or removed from a network connection without disrupting network connectivity or requiring the network appliance to be shut down. As Napatech network adapter features can be upgraded using a software download, new features can be introduced to the network appliance without disrupting traffic, by simply performing a bypass switchover, upgrading the network adapter and then performing a switch back to normal mode.

    Napatech Launches new Product Family

Napatech today launches a new product line addressing In-line network analysis applications with the release of the NT20E In-line Adapter. The NT20E In-line Adapter is the first PCI Express Network Adapter to provide genuine 10 Gbps line-rate processing, analysis and transmission of network traffic with zero packet loss for any packet size.

The NT20E In-line Adapter is ideal for OEM network appliance vendors in the network performance monitoring, network test, network security, financial trading and policy enforcement markets, especially those, which require full 10 Gbps throughput and application acceleration. While standard network adapters provide 10 Gbps ports, the effective amount of data sent or received through the port is actually less than 5 Gbps in typical operation. With the NT20E In-line Adapter, this limitation is now removed with full 10 Gbps throughput on all ports. This is important for many network analysis applications which are now facing challenges in handling 10 Gbps traffic.

Napatech Introduces new Cost-effective 4-port GbE Adapter

    Andover, Massachusetts - April 7th, 2009

Napatech today announced the introduction of a new member to the NT4 family of high-performance 4-port 1 Gbps Ethernet network adapters for PCI Express. The new adapter is named NT4E-STD and is an enhanced PCI Express version of the widely deployed Napatech XD network adapter for PCI-X. The NT4E-STD provides 4 x 1 Gbps Ethernet ports, doubling the number of interfaces currently provided by the XD network adapter and thereby halving the port cost. The NT4E-STD also provides complete RMON1 standard support allowing full off-load of statistics collection from host CPUs.

In addition to PCI Express and RMON1 support, the NT4E-STD provides a number of additional enhancements to the XD feature set:

    • Support for 4 x 1 Gbps ports both electrical RJ45 and optical SFP versions
    • Support for additional DDR2 RAM for data burst buffering up to 4 GB
    • Fixed Slicing functionality for payload discard
    • Support for Multiple CPU cores via 1, 2, 3 or 4 host buffers with individual statistics
The NT4E-STD uses the same API and programming interfaces as Napatech’s other adapter products.

Napatech Announces Support for Fiber Channel over Ethernet for their NT Family of 10 GbE High-performance Network Adapters

    Andover, Massachusetts - January 30th, 2009.

Napatech today announces support for Fiber Channel over Ethernet also known as FCoE for the NT family of 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps high-performance network adapters. The new Napatech FCoE implementation is an integral part of later releases and is now in the field.

By merging IP and FC traffic over the same Ethernet, large Serverfarms can reduce the number of adapters and cabling to half in the best case. The Napatech Programmable Network Adapters can now be used for monitoring this combined traffic.

The Napatech adapters support the FCoE standard by being able to filter, time-stamp and capture FCoE frames at line speed without packet loss. The main features and benefits of combining a Napatech Programmable Ethernet Adapter with FCoE support are:
    • Very accurate time stamp resolution of 10 nanoseconds, in six different formats
    • Very low CPU utilization, below 1 percent
    • Utilization of many of the advanced Napatech Network Adapter features
    • Distribution of network frames to 1-32 host CPU cores
    • Use of up to 64 advanced adapter hardware filters
