Napatech collaborates with Saviah Technologies and Supermicro on high-performance core for private 5G networks

Press Release

COPENHAGEN, Denmark – Feb. 15, 2024 – Napatech™ (OSLO: NAPA.OL), the leading provider of programmable Smart Network Interface Cards (SmartNICs) and Infrastructure Processing Units (IPUs) used in cloud, enterprise and telecom datacenter networks, today announced a collaboration with Saviah Technologies and Supermicro on a high-performance packet core for 5G private networks. While exhibiting at MWC 2024 in Barcelona from Feb. 26th through 29th, Napatech (booth #7B67) and Supermicro (#2D35) will be available to discuss this joint solution with interested attendees.

Enterprises with a need for highly-reliable, business-critical mobile communications are increasingly adopting private 5G networks in preference to public cellular or WiFi alternatives. In order for these networks to be cost-effective in locations like mines, ports, healthcare facilities, airports and utilities, it’s important for them to maximize the number of subscribers and/or devices that can be supported in a small-footprint server.

Napatech, Saviah Technologies and Supermicro have collaborated to optimize the cost-performance of Saviah’s 5G core (5GC) software by deploying it on server platforms from Supermicro optimized for network edge locations, that leverage Napatech SmartNICs to offload and accelerate the compute-intensive User Plane Function (UFP). This joint solution maximizes packet core performance while minimizing server cost and power consumption.

By leveraging the Napatech NT200 SmartNIC-based offload solution installed in a Supermicro SYS-221HE-FTNR server, the Saviah 5GC software sustains full, bidirectional 2x 100Gbps throughput while using only a single CPU core for the UPF control plane and without any cores being consumed by the UPF data plane. This compares to the performance of a pure software-based implementation, which delivers only 37.6Gbps throughput while consuming a total of 12 CPU cores.

“Saviah’s highly experienced professional team makes improvements and enhancements over and beyond free5GC, the world’s first open-source 5G core network, and has accomplished a robust, commercially launched 5GC network software,” said Jyh-Cheng Chen, founder of Saviah Technologies. “Through our collaboration with Napatech and Supermicro, we’re pleased to be able to boost the performance and energy efficiency of 5GC for high-bandwidth use cases, while meeting our customers’ needs for small-footprint deployments.”

“Through our partner ecosystem, Napatech ensures that our UPF offload solution is available to service providers and enterprises via products from industry-leading software vendors and server OEMs,” said Charlie Ashton, Senior Director of Business Development, Napatech. “We are delighted to be collaborating with Saviah and Supermicro to deliver this industry-leading packet core solution.”

“AvidThink was pleased to feature Napatech’s 5G UPF offload solution in our report Realizing the Promise of Private 5G in 2024, and we are delighted to see their continued success in bringing solutions to market via their partner ecosystem,” said Roy Chua, founder and principal, AvidThink. “As CSPs and enterprises look to deploy private 5G networks, Napatech’s solution can minimize the energy consumption, cost and footprint of their packet cores, contributing significantly to improving the ROI for their network infrastructure.”
